Warning: This Happy finishing Isn't in Every variation of the Tale!

Our short an overview is that the brothers Grimm's Red Cap, no Perrault's tiny Red talk Hood. Perrault's is the most well-known version the this fairy story in the world, however many parental still don't think it is suitable for today's children. It is pretty devilish indeed, and also a particular percent of kids can have nightmares after hearing or reading this version.

So let's take a look in ~ Perrault's tiny Red riding Hood (Le Petit Chaperon Rouge)!

What Is different in Perrault's Version?

The summary of Red speak Hood is usually the very same in both versions. The main difference is the lack of the hunter in Perrault's story: In this case, the story ends when the wolf eats the girl. We read just a conclusion in city saying no to to trust strangers.

Well, this is no the only difference! ns will current just a few—some may be negligible at an initial sight, yet if we take a couple of moments come think them over, we'll notice that every single detail deserve to make a huge difference.

Compare Perrault's and Grimm's Red Cap

In the start of Perrault's story, the mother offers the daughter a basket and sends her to she grandmother v the words: "Do no talk to strangers!" The warning about not leave the route was an addition by the Grimms. The message of both fairy tales differ. Perrault warns us not to to trust strangers and also the brothers Grimm emphasize how essential is to remain on the trail. The content of the basket is no the very same in both cases. Psychoanalysts were especially excited over a bottle of wine added by william Grimm. That is an alleged to have a strong symbolic meaning—and us will deal with that later!Perrault's Red riding Hood takes her apparel off and also gets into bed through the wolf. The implications are obvious. This version is not proper for kids, and also it really never ever was intended for a young audience in the an initial place. The Grimms' Red cap doesn't execute that: She just approaches the wolf and gets eaten.

Now shall us delve into the symbolism the the story?

Seemingly small details of the story can actually host deeper, concealed meanings.

Little Red speak Hood Symbolism (The covert Meanings)

Let's go from height to bottom:

The Hood covering the Hair

If the girl in the story is attract a hood (or cap), she is obviously covering her hair. Hair, specifically women's, plays an essential role in numerous cultures in the world. Once a girl reaches the age in i m sorry she turns right into a woman, she hair is thought about one of she most powerful tools because that attracting opposing gender. With spanning (or cutting) she hair, she sends a article she is not accessible yet (or anymore).

The color Red

When the girl it s okay a hood from her grandmother, we deserve to say the life forces are passing indigenous older (going) come younger (coming) generation. The red shade is, the course, the shade of life and blood. It deserve to be easily connected with expression blood.

The red shade of the hood is an innovation of Charles Perrault, and also we should know that in the 17th century, a decent woman would never ever wear a red hood due to the fact that red was the color of sin. Only ladies through really poor reputations wore red dresses, and also Perrault's insinuations were obvious.

The color Gold (Yes, Gold)

Before the 17th century, the story was currently well known. In part versions, the hood wasn't any particular color, but in some, it to be gold. Gold, of course, to represent maturity and also responsibility and at the finish of the day, we deserve to say this is what is tiny Red talk Hood every about.

The blog post of Red Cap

Perrault's "Don't talk to the strangers!" and also the Grimms' "Don't stray from the path!" are really two expressions that the exact same message: "Be responsible, or you shall pay the toll!"

The Forest

In numerous fairy tales, the main character (the protagonist) should go in the forest. It seems trees space an endless source of catalyst in folklore. There are many speculations why the forest is therefore important yet we can also stick come the obvious: Most people in medieval or pre-medieval times lived near forests. People's existence have actually been carefully related come the woods for virtually forever, yet forests additionally represent unknown, although very serious, danger.

In psychoanalysis, a forest symbolizes unconsciousness. Leonard Lutwack goes also further and also labels it as untamed feminine sexuality. Why? The forest is a an extremely fertile place, however it is likewise wild, uncultivated, and also unpredictable. That is no a coincidence that so countless popular heroes and heroines (Red Cap, eye White, Hansel and also Gretel, Goldilocks) must obtain lost in the woods just to come ago as much more responsible (and we have the right to say domesticated) persons. The revolution role the the woodland is obvious.

Even if the main character doesn't go into the woods, something important can occur there. Because that instance: The surname of Rumpelstiltskin is hidden in the woods, and also the Goose Girl lost her identity in the forest. In some cases, the forest represents the adversary itself (remember sleeping Beauty and also her rescuers?).

The Basket and the Bottle

What remained in Red riding Hood's basket? Charles Perrault opted for a cake and also butter, when the brothers Grimm provided her part cakes and also a bottle of wine.

Erich Fromm described the party in Red speak Hood's basket as a prize of virginity. The shape of a party is phallic, yet as a bottle it is likewise fragile and also breakable. In a dream analysis, a bottle can additionally represent suppression of feelings: instead of letting castle out, they are bottled. The bottle additionally has come be opened (or broken) to relax the trapped spirit. Since red wine represents passion, you can say the situation of decoding little Red riding Hood is nearly closed . . .

Remember: The icons (and their Meanings) Vary

If we desire to check out the hidden interpretations of fairy tales, we have to never forget how they were collected, written, rewritten, and also published. Initially, castle were dental stories, varying from mouth come mouth, village to village, sink to valley. Collectors were unreliable, always writing and also tweaking the product in accordance through their personal beliefs and also norms of the culture they belong.

For example, the background of Red cap (this translate into is much more accurate come Perrault's or Grimm's records) clearly shows united state bottle of alcohol is current only in among the thousands of known versions. We will certainly never know for certain what the Grimms thought once they incorporated it in the basket, but as Siegmund Freud stated: "Sometimes a cigar is only a cigar."

Interpretations, Theories, and also Analysis

Let's look at at tiny Red riding Hood v these different lenses:

theories around the story's absent father (where is he, anyway?)Red Cap as an allegory the resurrection Red Cap as a story about pregnancy Red Cap as a story about rape

Theories Behind the Tale's absent Father

Everybody familiar with the brother Grimm is already aware exactly how many absent fathers space in your fairy tales. We have a missing father in both the Grimms' and also Perrault's versions of Red talk Hood.

There room two explanations:

The function of the dad is play by the huntsman. He saved the girls, beat the beast, and also did what every an excellent father would certainly do. The protects and serves. The other explanation is slightly much more complicated. The dad of the Red talk Hood is split into 2 characters. An initial is the good, protective, civilized, and already-known huntsman. The second is much more primitive, brutal, dangerous . . . In short: male! This is stood for by a beast—the wolf.

In both explanations, the dad is really not missing; he is simply in disguise.

The situation of lacking father is similar to the function of the stepmother in fairy tales. In a child's imagination, the confrontation of the huntsman and the wolf is equal to the confrontation of the child and also his "bad father" (sooner or later, every child experiences an adverse emotions in the direction of his father). In this story, the huntsman does the dirty work, so the kid doesn't feeling guilt over the death of the beast. Great defeats evil and everybody is happy. Similarly, the personality of the evil stepmother can serve together a punching bag for children redirecting their an unfavorable emotions towards their actual mothers.

But folklorists have actually some 2nd thoughts top top the concept of missing fathers too. At least, we can easily find older versions of Red riding Hood through a present father and without a huntsman. In these versions, father death the beast, however there is one an ext important difference . . .

An Allegory of Resurrection, Death, and Rebirth

An very important part of little Red speak Hood is the ending, wherein the huntsman opens the wolf's stomach and saves the girl and her granny. This deserve to be defined as an allegory top top resurrection in Christianity. Both ladies died however are conserved by a greater power, represented by the huntsman. Once Red talk Hood and also her grandmother come out of the stomach, they arere symbolically born again—and we understand Perrault and also the Grimms were zealous Christians.

But then again, we have to not forget the old, pre-Christian myth around Chronos, in i m sorry this kind of 'rebirth' likewise occurred. If we ask mythologists, the story clearly reflects the never-ending game of day and night. Red lid (it to be gold in some older versions, remember?) to represent the sun, swallowed by night and later coming back to lug the light to the world again.

Why Is a wolf in Red riding Hood?

A lot of of popular fairy tales usage a witch or ogre together an opponent or antagonist. Why is a wolf supplied in this case?

Consider the time once Red lid was an initial written (the 17th century). Over there was more than likely an already-present are afraid of werewolves. At the very least two dangers can be joined in a wolf: a magic werewolf together a predator from the woods and also a greedy male together a predator in society.

In this illustration by Walter Crane, the wolf really resembles a pregnant lady ... Source: archive.org, PD licence

Red riding Hood Is a Story about Pregnancy (At the very least Freud thought So)

Religions, myths, and psychoanalysis can agree ~ above one thing: Pregnant females have had a special place through all history of humankind. They space bringing brand-new life come this world, yet they are likewise in peril of dying at delivery. A pregnant woman is still a taboo in countless societies.

Whether we know the action of opened wolf's stomach together resurrection, sunrise, or birth, us can likewise agree this is a really important moment. Maybe too crucial to be helped by anybody, and also in this case, the huntsmen look at like higher authority than a father. If us look at the enlarge versions, where the conserving was done by the father, it was no done by opened the stomach, but with cut the wolf's head!

This support theories by mythologists (we understand some Greek gods to be born out of heads) and is additionally in favor of psychoanalysts' interpretations, because the pregnant woman is in some cultures taken into consideration as a spiritual object and her belly should not be touch by man.

A Feminist View: Red speak Hood together a Story about Rape

The 20th century brought an additional interpretation of this (probably) most-interpreted fairy tale of all. Feminists see a clear situation of rape in the story that the little Red talk Hood. The aggressive and energetic male is preying top top passive heroine and also her granny. The is, in the end, beat by one more aggressive and active male. Case closed.

Well, not so fast. Feminists have actually some good points, however we must not forget we are really talking only about two versions of Red riding Hood here. Both were written at details times by specific members of society with their very own beliefs about roles of genders. The passive heroine and also the powerless old lady right well into their views of the human being in the 17th or 19th centuries.

But over there are other versions the Red Hoods the end there, part from before and also many from after the 17th or 19th century. There space Red caps who beat the wolf through their ingenuity, deceitfulness, or even their very own shotguns! So lot for the passive role. And also there are likewise variations that Red speak Hood in i beg your pardon the main role is play by a boy . . .

A last Word

In exploring various versions and possible hidden meanings in tiny Red talk Hood, we encounter numerous possibilities, yet the significance of the fairy tale still escapes the rational explanation.

The symbolism of Red talk Hood is one of the wealthiest of all standard fairy tales. This is just one of the key reasons for its popularity. It is undeniably a great fairy tale with dozens of undertones, yet sometimes its symbols are an ext coincidental than a product of collective mind or miscellaneous similar.

Does that mean our journey into the history of Red talk Hood was a rubbish of time? definitely not. Through every fairy tale explored, we always learn something new about our world, our history, and ourselves. Many thanks for accompanying me!

"yeah" I'm sorry to rest it to you, yet a most fairytales were actually originally dark and also sometimes didn't have actually a happy ending. "The tiny Mermaid" is a perfect example, where the mermaid didn't necessarily have a perfectly happy ending and story. She died because she didn't desire to kill the prince, and also every action she took felt choose needles. :) Plus, fairytales have plenty of hidden symbolism and many, prefer myself, gain finding these tiny details and shot to decipher them. Lock were, of course, made come teach kids lessons under a disguise of normally happy endings and also friendly (or not so friendly) animals.

Thanks, Chanse, for your input. Ns am constantly fascinated v all the possibilities because that an translate of seemingly a simple fairy tale.

Chanse Kyllonen on august 01, 2017:

Great interpretations here. A lot of adds to the present theme I'm about to explain. See, the story is an esoteric analogy of what's well-known as "the hero's journey" symbolized in numerous kid's stories. Back in medieval times the "common man" to be prohibited native owning books, or writing them. The privelage had actually to be earned via condition with the Royals and also the like. Progressively it become "lawful" come write/read children's publications n stories due to the fact that it helped help in children going come sleep in ~ bedtime. This is just how members of mystery & underground teams passed ideas and knowledge over many regions. The Renaissance and/or the period of Enlightenment, & period of reason happened due to the fact that of the expansion in arcane and also Esoteric wisdom. Naught evil about it, in spite of the propaganda, which continues to this day, that the Church was spreading. These teams went an enig to stop the cruel, cold, and also wicked punishments that the time. These people saw the feet in the accepted teachings and saw them together crystal-clear analogies and also metaphors. The latter teaching the gold Path the can, and needs to, it is in taken by any kind of individual psychologically ready and solid enough to take it on the journey towards spiritual initiation. Most, if not all, forefathers that science, math, chemistry, and philosophy to be alchemists (turning the ego within from mundane lead right into the pure & rare state that "gold" or Enlightenment), hermeticists, Rosicrucians, etc. At any kind of rate lot art and stories were developed for those with "eyes & ears" that understanding. Aka, understanding of the discerning mind, or third eye. Long story short, small Red Ridinghood symbolizes the spiritual feminine in ~ "Man," both male and also female, likewise known as Wisdom. The wilderness is the same an allegory that's spoke of in Scripture. Yeshuah had to travel v it, proverbially, prior to his ascension. This and other sayings of scripture is how, and why, members of mystery Schools experienced Yeshuah together nothing much more than a only mortal guy whom either played the archetypal role of the Universal and Cosmic Christos, or to be a messenger destined to spread the Esoteric truth to any type of who had actually the open mindedness and also discipline to listen. The wolf represents Sawtawn--meaning "adversary"-- or the ego i beg your pardon enslaves the Mind and Spirit that the usual person. Grandma is the Goddess "above", or the Macrocosmic Feminine. The last being the intangible reality behind the physical veil of illusion. Therefore in short, the story speak of the corruption that the Church in maintaining the spiritual reality of our divinity together the best symbol of the cosmos as a totality (holy), via archetype. (See " Man: cool Symbol that the Mysteries" by Manly p Hall) each organ, cell, bone, and so on symbolizes a Cosmic "law" both meta- and also physical, thus "made in God's image" (Universal Consciousness: cosmos is the body, awareness is the Mind, and also vibration/light/energy is the Spirit. In the start was the word.....sound, light, and/or vibration. Morpheus's line, in The Matrix, to Neo concerns mind. "Define 'real.' If you're talking around what you have the right to see, touch, smell, climate 'real' is just electric signals understood by the brain." Anyway, the church is a wolf in sheep's apparel acting prefer it's the sole bearer of Truth, and also Man demands it to attach to Spirit. The disquises itself together the "Grand Mother" by its patriarchal motives and demonizing the women. It wants to enslave or manage the minds of the masses, and also consume it's souls.....not unequal zombies, vampires, and collective robotic thinking shown in Star Trek. Lol, resistance is supposedly futile. In the end the huntsman v the twin edged axe, the latter also symbolized as a sword in myths, saves the work via gift "The Father." mine explanation is a small rushed since 2% battery continues to be on this device, so ns must finish it here. Hope this helps.

Many thanks for her thoughts, I appreciate that!

Sorcerers Stone on might 04, 2014:

You walk a great job of exploring countless options. I would include that there room similarities to the story of Persephone. So the time spent in the wolf's stomach is kind of like Persephone's time in Hades. The flower picking then symbolizes a find for self breakthrough (flowers opening= personal unfoldment). The wine would tie into that, too, because wine is "developed", transformed, and refers to Spirit, the transpersonal self. Granny and wolf room undistinguishable by LRRH since the adolescent descent into adult sexuality watch frightening, and can "devour" us for a time, however in the end it is every a sacred design for the development of person maturity or wisdom. You don't acquire much wisdom if friend don't discover the the contrary sex! That's the alchemical view anyway! therefore there space a few of my think on the symbolism.

Another fairy story with feasible meanings far past the face value ns took it v as it was red to me or told as a child. I remember being able to visualize it as the story relocated along...and Freud absolutely never gone into in. It seems the standard fairy tale writers hid a lot of meanings into your stories, maybe to provide the good minds something to think about as they check out these "harmless" children's stories to their small ones. I had actually never heard that Red and also Grandma being cut out of the wolf's stomach and it seems everyone but the wolf lived happily ever after. Fascinatingly done!
