You are watching: Jeep grand cherokee brake lights not working when headlights are on

Followed the wife residence tonight & i found it she had actually no brake lights (2000 grand chero laredo w/ 4.0L). Fuse 24 is great & the bulbs are good. What to check next....the switch on the brake pedal? Is this a recognized failure setting for these vehicles? every the remainder of the lights work-related ok.thanks,Mike Sal

To begin with, space you sure that she was making use of the brakes. If no one of the brake lamp work and the fuse is ok, ns would very first check the brake switch. The is adjustable. You can also remove the connector indigenous the switch and also put a jumper wire between the two pins, to check for a switch problem. If this every ok, examine for voltage in ~ the light bulbs. The reduced brake lights are known for their poor contact the the irradiate socket tabs.Just confirm the wiring schematics, however the fuse because that the brake lights is # 23 ~ above the junction block, no # 24.

I"ll shot to check it out this weekend.....just obtained home native a business trip & have to go come the funeral house tomorrow night.....I walk stick my head under the dash come look in ~ thw switch. It looks much various than the brake switches I"m used to. The plunger does relocate out once the pedal is pushed. I didn"t recognize how often a jeep brake light failed in this vehicles.Yes, ns typed 24 as soon as I meant 23 top top the initial post about the fuse.Since every one of the brake lights are not working, it"s not most likely to be negative contacts (and when I pulled the bulbs native one side, the contact are very clean). We"ll see....

It have the right to be the the switch plunjer is not relocating out enough to activate the move contact. I had this happening once after bleeding the brakes. Attached 2 pages with switch test info and also adjustment info. The difficulty with the light bulb sockets is not that they get dirty, however the small tabs simply don´t make good contact through the board. Occasionally you will have a mix of a charred lamp in one and also bad contact in an other, for this reason look at both. Concerning ground, the left and top brake light usage one ground, while the appropriate brake light uses a different ground.Be mindful that if the brake switch is not readjusted well, that additionally the cruise control will not switch off when braking, so can give uncomfortable surprises.

Thanks a lot because that the diagram.....I to be wondering just how to eliminate the switch from the bracket. Ns went by the junkyard & bought one more switch (3 dollars), however it was already disconnected indigenous the bracket, so i couldn"t see exactly how to eliminate it.I"ll inspect both switches & see just how they compare.Mike S
Good news, the old switch to be definitely bad & the salvage yard switch is still good. If i can attach the photo, you check out the call box I"m hold should have 3 metal tabs sticking up. The one the runs the brake light contacts tension cracked & dropped off (it"s the part laying down on the item of paper.I"m sure glad it was the switch, as I feared it would certainly be a quick somewhere that can be a pain to track down.Mike S
Arrrgghhhhh......I"m not done yet......When I changed the brake move & stepped ~ above the brake pedal, the brake lamp all came on & i thought everything in the civilization was good again......Tonight, following the wife residence again, after ~ dark through the lights on, ns noticed that once she stepped ~ above the brakes, only the 3rd light (at the height of the hatch) come on, and the tail lights went out. If the lights room turned off, the brake lights occupational ok.I checked the bulbs again ~ we got home & lock still examine good. Where need to I look currently to figure out this puzzle???Mike Sal

This really sounds together the famed socket tabs which don´t make great contact. First be sure that the light bulbs are ok. If castle are, then bending the tiny copper coloured tabs a little bit out and try again. I had it continue that i bend those tabs and the lights where working for a couple of days and then went out again. ~ a few times a simply bend the various other side the the light assy a little bit out and then they never ever failed again.

Ok, Cleaned the contacts on the sockets (they were an extremely clean to begin with) and even installed brand-new bulbs (just since I currently had them), yet no change. If the headlights space turned on, stepping top top the brake pedal will certainly make the tail lights prevent working and the brake lights prevent working (with the exception of the "third" brake irradiate on the hatch....it always works ok).I probed the electrical connections & uncover that that the 5 pins, 4 of them show continuity come ground. The attached photo is the just terminal (on both political parties of the car) that does not present continuity to ground. I"ll go ago now to watch which pins show any voltage once the pedal is pushed......Mike S

Pin 6 is the voltage supply because that the brake lights. Go you bending the tiny tabs native the irradiate sockets out? that is usually not a difficulty of dust or corrosion overthere, however the distance in between the tabs and the circuit board.

Ok, through the lights on, I have actually 12v at upper ideal terminal. Stepping top top the brake pedal (with lamp on), I likewise have 12v at top left terminal. But....if i plug the desk lamp assembly back into the connector (again, through both lights on and also brake activated), I gain no lights.Which terminal is supposed to be the typical ground? Why walk I have continuity v these terminals (to ground) as soon as the strength was off?Where is the harness grounded to the chassis? do I have to start pulling the inner panels in ~ the ago to chase the wires?I find it odd the this trouble happened at the exact same time the brake irradiate switch go bad, however I don"t see exactly how they would be connected.....any thoughts???thanks,Mike S
thanks for the diagrams. If the little tabs were not making connection, the lamp wouldn"t occupational at any time.....which mine do, as long as they are not supplied at the very same time.....Mike S
I took another look in ~ the contact at the bulb "and" the contact in the lens assembly. What I uncovered was the the floor tab in the lens was not in the same plane as the 2 contacts for the filaments. Ns dug under the sheet of the tab & bent that up......low and behold, every little thing works as it must now.....So, the wasn"t the bulb socket that wasn"t making an excellent contact, it to be the the lens contacts.....thanks because that everyone"s help.Mike S

If you had red my short article from the 21st, ns had already mentioned that. I had the very same problem, with the appropriate brake irradiate only. Bending the copper colored tab did perform the trick, but for a couple of days only. I also bend the steel plates in the light assy and the trouble was solved.
