Pretty much any type of bacon you buy comes already smoked and cured, exact same as ham right? i eat it life on occasion and also have never obtained sick. The only "raw feeling" i ever before get is indigenous the fat itself, the meat just reminds me the ham. However, on all the packages of bacon it claims to thoroughly cook. What exactly separates bacon indigenous ham that necessitates us needing to fry it up prior to consuming?

The essential thing to know below is the difference between hot smoking and also cold smoking. Hot smoking is fast, and merely imparts the taste the smoke come stuff. Cold smoking takes days, and cures the meat so the it is all right at room temperature.

You are watching: Can you die from eating raw bacon

Bacon is hot smoked. As is most modern-day ham. The ham is then pre cooked. This is why you have to refrigerate lock both. Bacon and also ham supplied to it is in cured in Ye Oldeny Times, however you don't usually see the nowadays. Jerky and summer sausage room cold smoked. This is why they space fine in ~ room temperature for varying amounts of time.

So prevent it. Friend won't necessarily gain sick, yet in the same means you won't necessarily obtain sick from eating raw chicken.

I still don't really recognize why that is no wise come eat life bacon from her explanation. You simply said: Well, bacon is hot smokes (so raw) and you should refrigerate it.

The inquiry still stands though: Why is the bad? and why is it necessary to regrigerate?

I guess I'm walk to try to summary the earlier posts and hope that it helps (feel complimentary to verify my information as i don't have actually a direct source)

Grocery save Bacon - Is injected with a "cure" if you desire to speak to it that. That is a systems containing nitrates (or nitrites, my chemistry is no bueno) and the slab sits for 45-60 min prior to it it s okay cold exhilaration for about an hour. Ns wouldn't recommend eating this raw

Hot vs Cold exhilaration - the is just as the sounds. Warm smoked is generally done in the >150F variety and will actually "cook" the food. Cold cigarette smoking is much more touchy and tricky, but never gets over the 85F selection (don't quote me on that).

In summary, ns wouldn't eat grocery keep bacon life (I'm not a stickler because that the rules trust me), but I would certainly eat warm or cold exhilaration bacon the was make via the #2 an approach described above.

Anybody indigenous r/Bacon or r/smoking the end there feel cost-free to correct me!

Even despite bacon is often smoked, it isn't cooking completely...hence the accuse to chef it prior to eating. Food preparation it guarantee that any type of bacteria on the surface is destroyed, enhances the flavor and improves texture together well.

Yes pork normally comes pre smoked, make it an extremely safe because that consumption but I think for liability purposes they say cook it thoroughly simply to be on the for sure side and avoid any legal repercussions.

As Andyhyeo mentioned, bacon is cooked because of its magnificent taste, yet that is a matter of an individual preference. You are safe come eat exhilaration bacon without food preparation it though.
